In what seemed like a surprise move, Disney has reinstated James Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It is, however, rumored that Disney hadn’t even searched for a replacement for the director.
Many were looking forward to the third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy series. Gunn had promised that it would wrap up the current guardians’ stories including those of
Given the nature of the tweet, Disney moved fast to let Gunn go. Even so, it seemed that DC moved even faster to hire Gunn to direct the sequel to Suicide Squad. As of Friday afternoon, Gunn was reinstated by Disney and he will be taking up Volume 3 after he finishes Suicide Squad 2.
During the storm, Gunn took responsibility for his tweets and publically apologized for the the inappropriate posts. Other than that, he was quiet regarding the issue. According to sources on the inside, Disney didn’t even bother to look for a replacement for Gunn, at least as far as the media is aware of.
Following the announcement, Gunn was thankful. In a tweet, he had this to say:
I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who supported me over the past few months. I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be. I deeply appreciate Disney’s decision and I am excited to continue to make films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all. I have been, and continue to be incredibly humbled by your love and support. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Love to you all.

Superhero movies are known for their redemption arcs, and Gunn getting one of his own is good to see. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was slated for a 2020 release prior to the firing but it may be pushed back several years depending on how long it takes Suicide Squad 2 to be complete.
