A disturbing report has been filed by Reuters claiming Tesla employees shared sensitive images and videos from its customer’s vehicles. Like every other company these days, Tesla gathers plenty of data on its users and has access to data you probably don’t realize they could get.

According to this Reuters report, between 2019 and 2022, groups of Tesla employees shared what Reuters calls “highly invasive videos and images” via a private internal messaging system. These videos and images were from the cameras on customers’ Tesla vehicles.
The recordings and images ranged from the day-to-day comings and goings to embarrassing footage of people. Tesla employees also allegedly shared videos of crashes and road-rage incidents, with one crash showing a child being struck by the Tesla that was recording the video.
Other contents shared by Tesla employees were images of animals and “funny road signs” made into memes by the employees who shared them. One employee claims that some of the videos were recorded when vehicles were off; this was a feature that Tesla’s used to have but is no longer used.
“We could see inside people’s garages and their private properties,” said another former employee. “Let’s say that a Tesla customer had something in their garage that was distinctive; you know, people would post those kinds of things.”
Reuter’s full article can be found here; it’s an interesting piece; as so many companies are collecting our data, we should be mindful of how they are using it. It will be interesting to see where this goes.
