Incipio Case Review: A Pair Of Solid Phone Protection Options

|
, , ,

We’ve reviewed a few Incipio cases here on Techaeris in the past, and now it’s time to look at a couple more. Our latest Incipio case review will take a look at the Incipio DualPro dual layer protection case as well as the NGP flexible impact resistant case for the Nexus 5X.

Design

We recently reviewed the DualPro case for the Nexus 6P, and it earned a spot as one of our Top Picks. It’s not hard to see why. The DualPro case is composed of two components — the impact resistant Plextonium™ polycarbonate frame which has a nice soft yet grippy finish, and a shock absorbing dLAST™ TPE inner core. While a lot of other case manufacturers are starting to use a hex shape raised finish on their inner TPE/TPU layers, Incipio is sticking with a solid inner TPE layer. The cutouts are where you’d expect them, and give you enough room to access the necessary ports, while leaving the camera and microphone unobstructed as well. Interestingly enough though, the inner layer has a bit of a larger cutout for the camera and fingerprint scanner area than the outer layer so there’s a bit of a gap between the edge of the outer layer and the back of the phone. The power and volume buttons are covered as part of the inner layer, but using them wasn’t an issue with this case at all. The Incipio logo is on the inside layer, but there’s a cutout on the outer layer in the lower right side of the back of the case for it to show through.

The DualPro case is available in Pink/Grey, Black/Black, Blue/Grey, and Grey/Grey colour combinations with the first colour being the outer shell colour. We were able to test out the Pink/Grey and the Black/Black combinations, and they both looked pretty sharp on the Nexus 5X.

The Incipio NGP case on the other hand is a single layer case, made out of a translucent, shock absorbing Flex2O™ polymer material that is stretch and tear resistant. Like the DualPro case, the NGP case has the proper cutouts, and also covers the power and volume buttons on the Nexus 5X. The Incipio logo is etched into the case on the bottom right of the back. I did notice that a couple of the cutouts had a bit of a rough finish on them, probably due to when they were removed from the mold. It’s nothing major but not as clean as you’d expect.

Even though it’s also available in multiple colours — Blue, Frost, Pink, and Black — they are translucent and the black of the phone was visible through the case to some extent, depending on the colour of the case. It didn’t look too bad, but translucent cases aren’t really my thing and I much prefer the solid finish on a case.

Both the DualPro and NGP cases are well designed to conform to your Nexus 5X smartphone.

Installation

Both cases were super easy to install. For the NGP case, it was a simple matter of sliding it over your smartphone and you were done. With the DualPro case, slip the inner layer around your smartphone, then snap the outer layer around it for full protection. Once on, both cases fit snug, the NGP case and inner layer of the DualPro case wrapping around and gripping the edge of the front of the phone.

Protection

As far as protection goes, both cases would definitely protect your phone from accidental drops, although I have more faith in the DualPro case given its two layer design and hard outer shell. In addition, as both cases wrap over the edge of the front screen, there’s some added protection when you put your phone face down on a table or desk as well.

Price/Value

Pricing for the DualPro case is $29.99 on the Incipio website, but they can be found for around $20 on Amazon, which is a great price for a dual layer case. The NGP case on the other hand is $19.99 on the Incipio website, and around $15 on Amazon. Both are a decent value, but for the price difference I would recommend getting the DualPro over the NGP for the added harder shell outer protection.

Wrap-up

The NGP and DualPro cases from Incipio are great considerations if you’re in the market for a new phone case. It’s not hard to see why the DualPro for the Nexus 6P was a Top Pick here at Techaeris, and that’s why the DualPro for the Nexus 5X is a Top Pick as well. While the NGP fell just a bit short of that designation, it is still a solid case for those looking for a single layer case.
