Design
Sleek, slim and lightweight this 27″ monitor is sure to fit nicely in just about any size desk area. The beauty of technology is it almost always makes things easier to handle as it grows and today’s displays are much easier than the CRTs of old. Crafted from premium aluminum and plastics the Acer H277HU doesn’t feel cheap at all and it adds a touch of class to your work area. The bezels on this thing are incredibly thin which give it a nice clean profile. The goldish tint of the aluminum is rather nice as well, I thought it might look gaudy but not at all. The included stand is nice and modern looking and you’re able to adjust the tilt angle but this is missing a height and swivel adjustment, those would have been nice to have. Overall the design is beautiful and the craftsmanship is nice as well.
Display
The 27″ IPS display has a resolution of 2560×1440 and details are crisp and clear when watching video and browsing the web. This display is probably not for design professionals who require a higher pixel density for photography and graphic design purposes. But Acer doesn’t market this monitor for those purposes, this is an at home high end monitor which delivers great use for office type use. Web browsing is fantastic on this monitor as is Netflix, YouTube and other video consumption. Office work such as Excel and Word also look fantastic with this monitor.
I used my 12″ MacBook as a source and one thing I noticed was the whites were a bit off compared to both my MacBook and MacBook Pro. It wasn’t horrible and not anything I couldn’t deal with. The monitor does come with adjustments and presets and after some fiddling I was able to get the whites to where I preferred them, still not perfect but very usable. Color reproduction was also a bit less vibrant than I would have liked. Again, nothing intolerable and making some tweaks helps dial in your comfort zone.
Brightness was plenty awesome on this display, I tend to run my displays at full brightness. My MacBook and MacBook Pro are always at full brightness (old bad eyes and all) and the Acer H277HU brightness was great around 80% for me so there is plenty of brightness to play with. Overall this is a nice crisp display, great for movies, web browsing, office suites and even some rookie Photoshop and video editing. Professional graphic designers, photographers and videographers are probably going to require more pixels.
Performance
The H277HU has several ports including 2 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI port and Display Port. The best thing about the H277HU is the addition of a USB-C port which is how I connected my 12″ MacBook to it. It’s nice to see Acer included this port on the monitor as USB-C is where we’re heading in general. The display performed great for my usage. I am a professional writer not a professional graphic designer or photographer so using this to type up stories was amazing. Yes I do graphics work such as Lightroom, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro and After Effects and I was able to use this monitor for those purposes but real professionals are likely going to require more from their displays. Basically this is a really awesome home monitor for office use and can double as an entertainment display.
There are speakers on this monitor and they honestly sound really really good for a monitor! The only issue, they’re on the back so you lose their impact. If they were on front that would have made a huge difference, but then you wouldn’t get those amazing slim bezels. Most people will use external speakers anyway, but these speakers are very nice.
Price/Value
$499 for this monitor isn’t a bad value, there may be other monitors that are cheaper we haven’t tested but we feel this price point is fair.
Wrap Up
A great home display for office, web browsing, entertainment and light photo/video editing.
